A healthcare employer interviewing a fresh paramedical graduate is asking one quiet question throughout the conversation: can this person be trusted with a patient, a sample or an instrument tray on their first week?
Theory tells you what. Practice tells you how.
You can memorise the steps of aseptic technique or correct patient positioning and still hesitate the first time you do it in front of a supervisor. Repetition removes that hesitation. That is the entire argument for practical-heavy teaching.
What good practical training looks like
Across our programmes, a well-run practical session has the same shape:
- A faculty demonstration where every step is visible and explained.
- Supervised student practice with immediate correction of technique.
- Repetition until the procedure is habit rather than recall.
- Assessment against the standard a hospital would apply.
It also builds professional conduct
Sterile discipline in the theatre, labelling accuracy in the lab, patient communication at the bedside — these are behaviours, and behaviours are learned by doing them repeatedly under observation.
When you compare institutes, ask how many practical sessions a week a student actually gets, and who supervises them. The answer to that question predicts your first job more reliably than anything else on the prospectus.
